Amal Jarrahi, PhD
Visual Artist & Scholar of Literature
Amal Jarrahi is a visual artist and academic whose work exists at the vital intersection of Francophone literature and the visual arts. She currently serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Western Languages at Jilin International Studies University (Changchun, China).
She earned her PhD in 2019 from Aix-Marseille University (France). Her doctoral research, “Fancy’s poetic in Romain Gary’s novels,” explores the complex meanders of the eccentric imagination. In her work, she investigates how Gary used fancy as a defense of laughter, lightness, and creative freedom—a “magical world” that challenges conventions and blurs the boundaries between reality and imagination. This rigorous foundation in the study of fantasy, madness, and the “effervescence of youth” directly informs her painting practice, creating a continuous dialogue between the analytical mind and the canvas.
Having lived and practiced her art in Tunisia, Iran, and South Korea, Amal investigates the profound themes of memory, identity, and cultural hybridity. Her creative work is a space of encounter; her paintings are visual narratives that reflect the complexity of intercultural lived experiences. Through her dual career as a professor and painter, she bridges the gap between literary research and intuitive creation, offering a unique perspective on how we represent the body and the soul in a globalized world.
